Sturtevant Camp Service Project

Saturday, April 22, 2017
7 a.m. - 3 p.m. (lunch included)

Friends of the San Gabriels
Adams Pack Station
Chantry Flat, CA

Sturtevant Camp was established in 1893 as a hiking retreat along the Gabrielino Trail in the Big Santa Anita Canyon. Today, the camp operates as a non-profit retreat offering overnight rental cabins to the public. Operating as a non-profit, the camp has its challenges. The latest is dealing with an aging infrastructure, repairing septic systems, and finding volunteer manual labor.

Join your fellow alumni and friends of Davidson as we help to maintain and preserve this wonderful historic resource. We will help to dig out the septic tank and 40 feet of leach field line at historic Sturtevant Camp in the Angeles National Forest. This will be a physically demanding day. We plan to meet at 7 a.m. at the Chantry Flats parking lot. Sturtevant Camp is a 4-mile hike from the parking lot through the Santa Anita Canyon. Once there, we will be digging for 3-4 hours, followed by lunch, and then a 4-mile hike back to the parking lot.

This project promises to give you a great upper body work out, and for those of you who may not be aware, the Santa Anita Canyon is one of the most beautiful hikes in Southern California. Dotted with historic cabins, the trail, with its ivy-covered floor, 50-foot waterfall, and enormous boulders and tree roots, feels like a Lord of the Rings fantasy world.

Directions: From the 210 Freeway, or any east-west thoroughfare such as Sierra Madre Bl. or Foothill Bl., go north on Santa Anita Ave. Follow Santa Anita Ave. and follow it all the way into the mountains. Adam's Pack Station is at road’s end, three miles from the entrance gate.

Parking: At the end of the road there is a public parking lot, but it is often full, even at 7 a.m. Parking in the lot also requires that you purchase an Adventure Pass, which is available at Adam’s Pack Station. If you cannot find parking in the public lot, Davidson volunteers will be permitted to park in the employees only parking lot at Adam’s Pack Station. Follow the driveway to Adam’s Pack Station to find this lot.

Please register below by Thursday, April 20.
