Join us for an illuminating afternoon at the Chicago International Film Festival as we watch Hard Truths, a character-driven drama from writer-director Mike Leigh. The film stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste, whose performance has been described as Oscar-worthy, and in the words of festival organizers, Hard Truths tells a "fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous" story of a troubled woman and her family. After the screening, we’ll gather for a casual discussion nearby to reflect on the film and enjoy some great conversation. Watch the trailer for the film here.

About the film:Hard Truths offers an unflinching look at a woman who cannot seem to find happiness. The BBC's Caryn James writes that Marianne Jean-Baptiste "brings both dynamism and understanding to the prickliest of characters, in what is sure to be one of the best performances of the year." The Chicago International Film Festival adds that "Hard Truths takes us into the intensities of kinship, duty, and the most enduring of human mysteries: that even through lifetimes of hurt and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family."
Run time: 97 minutes; MPAA rating: R
